PHOTOGRAPHY OVERVIEW

PHOTOGRAPHY is my passion. Is it yours? Are you a professional or just a hopeful amateur having some fun? Whether an expert or a beginner, photography is a timeless way of capturing history and the world around you, and the best part is that there are many types of photography. Personally I am an old hand with the ‘olde’ SLR and multiple lenses, but the art of digital photography has captured my imagination in more ways than I can describe.

Traditional photography has always relied on many manual pieces of equipment. The single-lens reflex camera or SLR has been the mainstay of the majority of photographers for almost 150 years. The first one was made in England by Thomas Sutton, but the very first digital camera did not appear until 1981, the Sony Mavica.

For beginners, photography can be challenging as there is so much to learn. Photography in itself is a simple process, an art where moving or still photos are created. To understand this better, think about your eyes and how your lenses absorb light information and then think about a camera lens, which works in a very similar way. Camera lenses record images from light or radioactive waves that can be recorded on light sensitive film or a tiny electronic type sensor. Patterns of light reflect through the lenses and activate the sensor or film chemicals. However, that is again the simple version.

Photography can be used for many purposes. Generally the average person, maybe you, enjoys the pleasure of recording memories of friends, families, pets, events and places to share and treasure as keepsakes. Others, like myself, use the camera to record news, events and history. However, there are other uses for the camera, including forensics, thermal imaging and so much more.

Photography is a broad subject and I will share with you images and information that you can enjoy, maybe even use. However, this site is about the art of photography – digital and SLR.
